Windsor Road After Dark: What Opened Across From the SMART Station This Fall

Downtown Windsor got two new places to spend an evening this fall, and they sit at either end of a short walk. Spur Saloon opened in August at 9000 Windsor Road, across from the SMART station. Trecini Winery opened its tasting room on September 25 at 9071 Windsor Road in Town Green Village. The saloon stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. The last weekend train out of Windsor leaves at 8:03 p.m. That leaves four hours of evening that mostly belong to people who live close enough to walk home.

The clock that sets the shape of a Saturday night

On a weekend evening, the train schedule and the saloon's hours decide who is still on this block and why.

Time What changes on Windsor Road
4:00 p.m. Spur Saloon opens its doors
8:03 p.m. Last weekend SMART train leaves Windsor heading south
9:00 p.m. Spur switches from family-friendly to 21 and over
11:14 p.m. Last weekend train arrives in Windsor from the south
Midnight Spur closes on Fridays and Saturdays

Before the 8:03 there's a long gap. The train before it leaves Windsor at 6:27 p.m., so a friend who came up from Santa Rosa or Petaluma for drinks has two choices on a weekend, and both come early. Weekdays run a little later. The last southbound train leaves at 8:18 p.m., and the last northbound train pulls in at 11:21 p.m.

The late trains go one way. A Windsor resident coming home from San Francisco or Marin can get off after 11 p.m. and walk across the street to a bar that's still serving. Their guests from down the line need to leave by about 8, or get a ride.

The empty brewery across from the platform

Eric Foster and Christina Keeney Foster already run Grata Italian Eatery, which opened in 2020. According to Sonoma Magazine, they had watched the empty brewery and tasting room at 9000 Windsor Road for years and saw it as a missed opportunity. They tried out several concepts before deciding on a country-Western saloon. The idea was to fill a gap in Windsor nightlife, with a place where locals could keep going past 9 p.m.

Foster described the early response to the magazine this way:

"People keep saying, 'This is what we needed,' and we wanted to create a place where we would want to go. But the main drive is a place in town that gets people out and having fun."

The room comes with saddle seats bolted to the floor, rifle chandeliers bought from a Sacramento country bar that was selling off its decor, and a longhorn mural over a long banquette. The horseshoe-shaped bar fills up from the 4 p.m. opening. Several cocktails come on draft so the bar can keep up, and the signature drinks are $15. The kitchen is all-electric, with an oven, a smoker and a few induction burners, so the menu is mostly shareable small plates. Sonoma Magazine's September review called these out:

  • Smoked onion dip, $13
  • Frito pie, $12
  • Elote salad, $15
  • Ahi ceviche tostada, $20
  • Bison sliders with chimichurri and red-eye glaze, $19
  • Loaded baked potato with cheese béchamel and candied bacon, $19

Live music is planned about twice a month. Line dancing, music bingo, karaoke brunch and happy hour are also on the calendar. The 9 p.m. switch from family-friendly to 21 and over comes about an hour after the last weekend train south. By the time the crowd turns adult-only, the people still there are mostly within a short drive or walk.

Why a grape grower opened a tasting room on the Green

The other new opening, at the Town Green end of the walk, comes from the vineyard side of Windsor. Kyle and Christina Cameron farm about 305 acres of wine grapes across Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino counties, and most of their vineyards are in Windsor. They bought the Trecini brand in April 2025, moved it to estate-grown grapes and hired winemaker Gianna Fugazi.

The North Bay Business Journal's report in the Press Democrat explains the reasoning behind the storefront. About 10% of Trecini's sales currently go directly to consumers, with the rest coming from wholesale and bulk-wine sales. From the 2025 vintage it made a little more than 35,000 gallons but bottled only about 3,000 standard cases under its own label, and the remainder was sold on the bulk market. The tasting room is meant to raise the direct-to-consumer share of sales.

The space at 9071 Windsor Road used to be Bellacana. It's 1,100 square feet, with 22 indoor seats and some seating outside. Christina Cameron told the Business Journal that downtown Windsor appealed partly because of the tasting rooms already nearby: Tasting Notes, Mutt Lynch, Baldassari and Bienvenue. Trecini said it would offer free tastings through November 1, so Halloween weekend, October 31 and November 1, is the last chance.

Halloween Saturday puts the whole walk to use

This Saturday, October 31, Somos Windsor's Día de Muertos takes over the Town Green. The organizer's page lists 3 to 7 p.m. Sonoma Magazine's September roundup gave the hours as 4 to 8 p.m., so check the Somos Windsor event page before you head out.

The program on the Green includes:

  • An opening blessing with Pomo and Azteca dancers
  • An electric-candle procession around the Green to honor the dead
  • Altars and a Tree of Life memory wall
  • A La Catrina costume contest and a lowrider car show
  • Free performances by the Luther Burbank Youth Mariachi Orchestra and Ballet Folklórico Sarita de Windsor
  • Free sugar skull decorating, one per child
  • Food and craft vendors selling tacos, tamales, pozole, tortas, enchiladas, elote, churros and more

The organizers ask people to bring low-backed beach chairs or camp chairs. No alcohol is sold at the event, to keep the traditions sacred.

One way to string the evening together runs from the Green up Windsor Road.

  1. Spend the afternoon on the Green for the blessing, the procession and dinner from the food vendors.
  2. Head to Trecini at 9071 Windsor Road for one of the last free tastings, after checking the tasting room's hours.
  3. Walk up Windsor Road to Spur Saloon, where kids are welcome until 9 p.m.
  4. If guests came by train, plan for the 8:03 p.m. southbound departure.

A one-way timetable, at least until 2028

SMART has added service this year. The Press Democrat reported in April 2026 that the new schedule took weekday trips from 42 to 48 and weekend trips from 16 to 24, with earlier and later weekday trains. Even so, the last weekend train south leaves Windsor about four hours before Spur closes on a Saturday. Times can change, so check the current timetable at SMART's website before planning around a specific train.

Windsor will stay the end of the line for a while. SMART's Healdsburg extension page shows design and early fieldwork underway on about nine miles of new track and a Healdsburg station. Passenger service is planned for late 2028. Until then, a late night on Windsor Road works best for anyone who can walk home from the platform.

At Sonoma Coast Living, we pay attention to which blocks stay lit after the last train and what that tells us about everyday life in a town.
